Wardrobe Wednesday!
A new feature here at Blythe Hopes Vintage - Wardrobe Wednesday! Every Wednesday, we'll bring you a capsule wardrobe for various occasions - helping you to stay styling whatever life throws at you!
This week - Office Space:
A lot of the time if you work in an office, it's very temping to fall back on basic, plain, and - let's face it - boring clothes. No more! Wearing colour and adding interesting details will make you stand out from the crowd - and if you look good, you feel good!
An easy way to add colour is a fabulous blouse - I found these on etsy.com :

Oh Edward...
I've become rather obessed with Twilight lately (Thanks Holly) and so it stands to reason that I'd name the new love of my life after Edward Cullen....
He's a vintage Singer model 348, which I found at my favourit thrift for all of $15 :)
What's great is now not only can I make my Zombie Dolls a lot faster - but I can also make all the pretty clothes I want!
It's well exciting ♥
I'm working on a blouse to go with the blue and cream kirt right now, and pulling a pattern off a bed jacket. I'm not happy with the neck line on the first dress either - I may pull it down into a v - I'm not sure that high neck really suits someone as flat chested as myself lol.

Lets talk 20s
The 20s are just about my favourite era in fashion. This was a time after the first world war when many women found themselves at the head of their households - and boy did they rise to it! The fight was on for equal rights, and the freedom of now being under men's thumbs could be seen in the new lines in fashion.
One of the biggest changes to support (hee hee) the new freedom in fashion was the doing away of the corset - in order to fix cars, go to work, milk the cows - have lives - women needed to be able to BREATH!
This brought on some of the most beautiful lingerie - here are some examples available from starletvintage:
Note the soft lines and lace - there's no lack of feminity in the 20s look despite the boyish lines.
Of course - the first thing most will think of with regard to 20s fashion is the flapper - which really was only popular between 1926 and 1928 when skirts rose from calf length to just above the knee -and in the late 20s asymetrical skirts led the way back to a longer length.

So This RN Thing
A lot of clothes manufactured in the US have either a WPL (Wool Product Label) or an RN number on the label - and these numbers can help, along with our other tools, to narrow down a date of a company.
The WPL numbers were issued by the FTC between 1941 and 1959 - so if you find an item with a WPL it means that the company that made it started between those years. It does NOT mean that your item is that old however, as the company may still be in exsistance and using the same WPL.
The same goes for RNs - these were first issued between 1952 and 1959 - after 1959 RN numbers completely replaced the WPLs.
There's a great entry about RNs and WPLs on The Vintage Pavement - Subhadra explains it really well, and has a great mathematical formula for cracking the code.
Also - check out Ikwewe's guide to RNs, WPLs and CAs - The woman is brilliant.
If your item only has an RN or WPL number and no other labels - you can find out which company owns the number here - and then use TESS to find out more about them.

Top to Toe!
I know there are a lot of people out there who think wearing top to toe vintage would look outlandish - like you're on your way to costume party - but it's surprisingly easy to find the perfect outfit, and the quailty is going to surpass anything you find at the mall for the same price!

It's getting on for Halloween!
It's coming, the best night of the year - I love it - Halloween! When I was a kid, I used to spend weeks, months even coming up with an idea for a costume, and the even longer supervising whichever hapless parent who volunteered to help (read do it all) me make it. I was a bat, a skeleton, a witch, Wednesday Adams (my brother was Cousin It with a coconut hair skirt around his head)... good times.
Of course when I was little we all went off in groups by ourselves without an adult - there wasn't a worry of scary people kidnapping us, or being given poisoned sweets. There's no way now I'd ever let my daughter go by herself - and if kids reported to my door without a parent I'd be tracking down those parents in a heartbeat.
My daughter's going to be a dragon this year - so cute - so I may do the medieval princess thing to take her trick or treating - in a vintage gown of course!
Here are some ideas from my shop - with the right accessories - vintage can make the perfect costume!
How about a Marsha Brady outfit? This dress comes with a matching (!) waistcoat - be a 70s disco queen this Halloween!
Or you and your friends could be flappers - without the 20s price tag. Try the 80s doing twenties dresses!

Lessons I learned from my mother...
My mum's been here this week - she's the original fashionista. She left school at 16 to become a hairdresser, which was terribly frowned upon back in the day, as she was intelligent and had gotten into grammar school. But by the time she was twenty one, she was working with a top hairdresser in London, styling celebrities hair and working the big fashion shows in Milan, London, and Paris. She had her own car, had all her clothes made, and generally was having a rocking time.
She was terribly shy, though, and used her clothes as armor - a 'look good, feel good' policly, which I still hold to this day. It's amazing to me how people's perceptions are so influenced by how you present yourself to the world - the number of times people have said to both my mother and I 'you're lucky, you can get away with that as you're tall' - we both stand at 5'4".
While I obviously know it's important to possess self confidence - and that one should fel great in ballgown or binbag - most of us are not blessed with that self assurance naturally.
But is is possible to fake it til you make it - would you believe that the women in these photos thinks that she's terrbily unphotogenic, and to this day isn't that keen on posing?
There are days when when all you want to do is curl up in a tracksuit on the couch - and if you can that's cool - but if you do have to go face the world, it's better to do it in a great outfit with a smile on your face - by lunchtime you'll feel better :)

Wednesday Finds!
Okay - so last week I was well pleased with myself that I'd found a green Shaheen maxi dress for myself - only to go out hunting at the weekend and find another one!Honestly, these dresses are so elegant on, I wore mine to my niece's wedding, it was perfect.
