Embracing Winter

I've live in the barren frozen arctic north for 3 years now, and if there's one thing I've learnt, it's that I hate snow. Hate.

However, a friend whose advice I've come to trust, told me a couple of months ago that I ought to embrace winter, so I thought I'd give it a try... I have two new obsessions, icicles and snow walls.

The first is more specifically taking photos of icicles -

... and the second.... well, my neighbors think I'm nuts, but shoveling the driveway my as well be fun right?

I'm going to build it up every time I have to shovel. Ho ho ho.

I've been trying to be uber organised this year, and get all my present shopping done before the end of November.

Hasn't worked so well. However, I did find the BEST present for my bestest yesterday - I'm so excited, she's gonna love me forever. I wish I could share it here, but I know she reads this, so I can't.

It's fabulous though.

I think that's my favorite part about the holidays - I love hunting down presents for people that I know they'll pee themselves over.

Photo Shoot Fun

The last few weeks have been CRAZY. In between packing, sorting out the new house, and the entire household catching the flu, I feel like I've not had time to catch my breath.

However, I did manage to squeeze in the most FABULOUS photo shoot in the world with the ever talented Rome Celli. The star bar that he is managed to get permission to shoot at a gravel pit here in Rochester, a seriously cool location.

He also wrangled up two of the most beautiful models I've ever seen - Devin and Anna, who were just total superstars - the day of the shoot was 95 degrees and glaring sunlight, but they still managed to looking stunning.

Our make up artist Tiffany and hair stylist Jacquelyn pulled out all the stops and created looks that tied all our ideas together - they are super talented ladies and enormous fun to work with.

I'm slowly listing the outfits from the shoot in the shop, but here are some of my favs:

Back from Vacay

I had a great time though, we went down to the Finger Lakes - unfortunately it rained most of the time we were there, but at least they have some very cool (and giant) antique malls down there. I was going to show you the pretty 50s lace dress I got, but it sold within minutes of being listed.

We also hit up Sonnenburg Gardens, which is a wicked Victorian Mansion and park - it totally reminded me of my boarding school, Rochelle House, which sadly they tore down a few year ago to build luxury apartments (boo, hiss).

I made my Father In Law promise to build me some wooden green houses - seriously, how cool would it be to have these scattered about your yard?

Anyhow, the whole thing made me long for all things Victorian... especially the chairs....

... and the fountains....

.....sigh......

BOO. HISS.

I woke up to the sound of rain this morning. Just before I leave for my mini break. I tried to stay optimistic - people are forever telling me about 'lake effect' weather in this part of the world, so I went off to weather.com to see if there might me a freak heat wave by the lake.

Nope, constant rain til Tuesday, which coincidentally is the day we're coming home. I may need to stop and get some indoor toys for the monkey. And books for me.

It's bit cooler today (boo to oncoming fall) so am in my jeans. Thankfully New York and Company started making 0s - I used to have a hell of a time finding jeans that fit me. The top is actually suede patchwork - I bought it about 10 years ago in Hong Kong and forgot I had it. I'm usually not a halter neck fan as I've fairly broad shoulders compared to the rest of me, but I like the neckline on this one.

Just for a change, absolutely nothing vintage today - I didn't know it was possible.

I am utterly and completely behind on all things blog related.

I have 6 posts half finished, photos that want editing, and a list of items a mile long that I had planned on featuring last week.

Why? Am attempting to buy a house. Apparently it's all rather complicated, and not helped by the fact that American isn't my native tongue. It appears that know one knows what an Estate Agent is, and that 'solicitor' has rather negative connotations (actually - that's true in England too). It tends to make what should be short conversations turn into lengthy translations and discussions about where I grew up.. sigh.

But it will be worth it. Let me show you why I have to have this house:

Oh yes. It's aqua. The Realtor (see, I'm learning) laughed when I asked if I could make an offer on the stove even if they wouldn't take the offer on the house. I wasn't joking though.

Making a Mineral makeup Palette

I adore mineral makeup. Especially eyeshadows. I have far too many.

But one thing I hate is how messy they get, especially when one has a toddler around that wants to play too.

So I came up with an ingenious idea. It really is one of my more brilliant ones I promise. I'd seen a blog post ages and ages ago about how to refill vintage compacts - and I thought to myself, hmmmmmm, I wonder if it'll work with eyeshadow too? So I tried it. And it worked.

Things you'll need:

Eyeshadows

A pill box - one of those ones with the different days of the week on will do grand

Rubbing alchohol

toothpicks/ tiny spoon/ something to stir with.

eyedropper

I recommend you put newspaper down wherever you decide to work - it's kinda hard to be neat doing this, and it's really hard to get these pigments out of things.

Open one little window at a time, and pour your desired eyeshadow into the box, fill it max half way. Using your eyedropper, slowly add the rubbing alcohol to the shadow and stir til it forms a paste, more on the liquidy side, but not too watery.

Close that lid off for now and repeat with the rest of your shadow. It's important to keep the lids shut as you'll find the powder wants to spill as you pour it, and you don't want the colours to mix.

Once you've finished, open all the lids up and leave over night.

As the alcohol evaporates you'll be left with shiny, mess free, cakes of mineral eyeshadow.

Who needs Urban Decay eh?

Bargain - Photo Pendants

Ye all know I have a...thing... about photography right? The warm fuzzies I get looking through photography shops on etsy is on par with the excitement of browsing through 20s dresses, or fabulous vintage lingerie - pulse quickens, hands shake... sometimes I even drool a little.

Sadly, my budget stops me from buying an awful lot of what I love, although after I've dealt with this house business I plan on a major shopping spree. A HUGE one.

Poor Kitty

My apologies for not posting yesterday - I celebrated my first day of freedom from the shop by visiting the farm with my girlfriends, and hanging out with my favourite four legged creatures.

Remember Agnes the baby deer? She was running about with her mammy and looking just too cute for words.

Trends: Camping!

Growing up in Hong Kong, camping seemed like the most exotic of holidays. No, really, I'm serious. Outdoors for us was going on hikes through the country parks, or up into the New Territories, and if you did 'camp' it meant staying in government built concrete hut things.

So sleeping in an actual tent, with a real camp fire (not a government issue concrete grill) seemed terribly exciting. And unlike that snow stuff that everyone made such a fuss about, when I got older and moved away, it turned out to be just as fun as I thought.

In fact, during college, myself, Lally, Drew and Colin (hi boys), used to sleep out on the beach for fun., campfire going and Colin with his ever present guitar. Great fun.

So you all know that Holly of HauteCountryVintage is my bestest etsy friend, but quite apart from being just generally lovely, she has one of the most fabulous shops on etsy.

I'm very proud.

It was actually a perfect day to play in the dirt - I'm so fair that usually I can only go a few hours in the full sun before burning, but yesterday was cool and overcast, so managed to get the carrots, peas, beets, broccoli and peppers all weeded.

As much as I complain about weeding, I actually love the simplicity of it - weed, not a weed, weed, not a weed. It would be really nice if the same thing applied to life, but I generally find that the things that look good tend to turn out to be weeds, and the stuff you think is worthless is the harvest.

It's really annoying.

Wardrobe Wednesday: Short Shorts

I was chatting to someone the other day and I was saying that if I had it my way I'd only need a bikini all year round. And I also have a thing about short shorts. I own way to many pairs. I LOVE heat, and sunshine, and beaches, and perpetual summer.

I've come to the conclusion since living in the barren arctic north that the government must be putting something in the water that convinces people that playing in not quite frozen water, and that strapping planks of wood to their feet is fun. It's not. Think about how ridiculous that is for a second. I'm this close to actually buying my airstream and driving it down south.

But I digress.

So I'm thinking of attempting another kitten.

I've not had much luck with them really. I got my current cat Mel, when she was about 4 months old, and she's fabulous, really strong, healthy - a real hunter. She actually hid from me for about 4 months after I got her, she'd only come out at night to eat, so I took to getting up at 3am to sit quietly in the dark so she'd get used to me.

She's now a totally mush, bless her, and is rarely very far from me.

However, she does not play well with others. I've tried to introduce 2 kittens into the household since I've had her, and she's hunted and terrorized them so much that I had to separate them. As it turns out, both the kittens had a random bug, and ended up dying despite the vet doing everything they could for them.

I'd pretty much given up on having another - but now the latest litter at the farm is seriously cute and tempting.

There are two I'm trying to decide between, this blond one:

And this gray one:

I'm leaning towards the gray one, she's really healthy looking, very playful, and runs up to me whenever I'm outside. The blond is more docile, very sweet tempered, but I need a tough kitten that's not going to get frightened by Mel pretending she's a tiger...

Lessons in Gardening

I spoke to my mother today, bless her, for some reason she had it stuck in her head that melons grow on trees.

(They don't just in case anyone else is under a similar delusion)

I totally get that growing things can be a kind of abstract concept when you grow up and live in big cities, but I've always loved planting things. I love the idea that a tiny little seed turns into a giant plant, I love that you can read the instructions on the packet, and if you follow them, it'll grow.

I even love weeding. There's something just so satisfying about pulling them. Sometimes when the rows are crowed, or there's been a lot of rain, it's hard to tell what should be growing and what shouldn't. The only way to do it really is to pull away all the things you know are weeds, picking them all off one by one until you can see what should actually be there. Even the Shepard's Purse - you know it's going to sting, but you just have to suck it up, because it shouldn't be there, and if you let it lose, it'll over take everything.

I started some peas way back in March, and today, I just noticed I have one tiny little pod. It may be a simple thing, but it does show me that life is still carrying on as it should.

And if nothing else, this deer will always be my friend - he comes to see me whenever I walk pas, and tries to lick me through the fence. Most likely because I've spoiled him with apples over the years, but I like to think he likes me.

Sunday Specials: Tennesse Floods!

So as per usual, my search for peace and tranquility has been thwarted. I guess I'm just not cut out for it - and in all fairness, I'd get bored.

I arrived to bright sunshine and warmth on Friday afternoon, and checking the weather, they told us to expect storms on Friday evening...

Yeah - it hasn't stopped raining since then. Yesterday, Hols and I decided to go hunting anyhow, and we're blithely driving around, hitting thrifts, going to subway, grabbing coffee milkshakes and getting soaked, when suddenly we hear a giant siren going off. So we're looking around for a fire truck, police car, whatever, and there's none to be found.

Then the realisation dawned that it wasn't a vehicle siren, it was the tornado siren. As we were on the highway and had no intention of going and lying down in the flooded ditch, we kept driving ( actually, I wanted to go see the tornado, but Holly wouldn't turn around - boo).

On the way home, we saw people carrying animals out of their flooded houses, and cars nearly totally submerged. Right now, there's a river flowing around Holly's house, but at least it's around not through. We have a contingency plan in case it starts flowing through the house - apparently there's someone with a boat....

Makeup Monday! Why I love Benefit...

Have you ever found a brand of makeup that literally does everything you want it to do? For me, it's Benefit cosmetics.

Unless I'm doing photo shoots, my makeup is very minimal - I like the no make up makeup look - and so for that reason I don't even use that much. The reason Benefit rocks out so much is they have mini sets at reasonable prices when you think about how long they're going to last. My lastest love is this pallete:

It's $36 - but contains EVERYTHING I need on a daily basis - al I add is mascara and BeneTint:

Both these together come to 56 - but it's everything I need for a good 6 months. Bargain. You can click the images to go directly to the Benefit site to read more about them - but if you use Sephora you can usually get good deals on shipping and many free goodies :)

It's more than likly I won't be going anywhere today, as my DH woke up with a fever and general nastiness.

I honestly haven't had so much fun it a long time - our model, Alex, is quite possibly the most beautiful thing ever, and such a pro.

I took my turn too, Maria, the MUA, put my hair up into a giant 60s jobbie.

I'm going to have my work cut out for me getting everything listed now, I did get some done last night, but in between playing nursemaid today, I'll try get the rest up :)

If there's one thing every girl should own, it's a crinoline.

'I can't wear a crinoline!' I hear you cry - yes, you can! You don't have to be a stick insect to wear one either - you just have to pick a length to suit your shape, and balance the skirt with a suitable top.

If you're very thin, you can wear a short, very full crini, and balance it out with a top that has a bit of pouf to the sleeves:

Tuesday Trend: Lovely Layers

Have you ever wondered what to do with your huge collection of vintage slips and robes? Okay, maybe it's just me that has an entire chest dedicated to my collection, but let's face it, there are only so many nights in a week.

Here's the thing, they don't need to stay in the bedroom! Oh yes - you can show off your pretties without people asking you if you forgot to put your dress on (unless of course you know my father in law - in which case I can't help you).

The key is in layering. You want to stick with things in the same colour range, for example, pastels with pastels, jewels with jewels to keep the whole look flowing. Also, mix textures, add woolens, leathers and cottons to bring your nighties into the light - if you wore a bright red slip with black robe and black tights - you'd look like an extra from Moulin Rouge.

Thrifty Thursday: Children

Happy Thursday :)

With the economy the way it is, I know a lot of parents are going to be struggling to get toys and presents for their children this Christmas. So I thought I'd share with you so things that my daughter adores that are fun, inspire imagination and self learning, and won't break the bank.

If you're a sewer, I know you'll have tons of scrap fabric around, but even if you aren't, raid everyone's wardrobes for clothes that don't fit, are stained, ripped whatever, and cut them up - I made this fab play mat for my daughter in a couple of days out of scraps, old shirts, and some left over polyfil from a cushion my cat scratched up. The base layer is from a vintage wool coat that had irremovable stains on. And if you don't sew, no worries - a tube of fabric glue will set you back about $5 and works just as well :)

I think most kids love mini things - so why not get some blank peg people?

Wardrobe Wednesday: European Vacation

Before we begin, I'd like to clear up some common misconceptions about Europe for our American friends.

Europe consists of many countries, cultures and social differences.
Therefore, what is acceptble in one country may not be acceptable elsewhere.
Therefore, despite what popular teen movies may lead you to believe, not every 'European" girl is going to be a bed hopping, nekkid happy, buxom babe.
Also, many parts of Europe are very damp. I still hold that Sinead O'Connor didn't shave her head to make a social statement - it was coz she was sick of fighting the frizzies.
